MLSでは、過去7年間にわたり、埼玉県のとある大学付属中学校のサマーキャンプにて、英語部門を担当させていただいています。プログラムの内容は、英語によるショートプレイ作りを通じて、英会話力と身体表現力の向上を図るというものです。
昨年度からは新たに、年度末に開催される「English Festival」において発表する、英語劇の指導にも携わることとなりました。
今年は特に、系列大学の名誉教授が劇を鑑賞し、全クラスの発表後には舞台上から「とても良かった」とのお言葉をかけてくださいました。また先生は、以前よりMLSのことをご存じで、今回も指導に関わっていることを大変喜んでくださいました。
今回の「English Festival」でMLSが指導にあたったのは、中学1年生と中学2年生のクラスでした。以下に、いただいたの講評の一部をご紹介いたします。なお、参考までに、スピーチ全文を英語・日本語の両方で掲載しておきます。
中学1年生の発表については、
「観客全員が物語に引き込まれていました。明るくて、楽しくて、1年生とは思えないほどエネルギーに満ちていました。」
中学2年生による英語ミュージカル『青い鳥』については、
「まるでブロードウェイ・ミュージカルのようでした。衣装も演出も非常にダイナミックでクールでした。歌やダンスも素晴らしく、You did a super job.」
以上のような高い評価をいただき、指導にあたった私どもとしても非常に光栄で、今後の励みとなる経験となりました。

Speech by Its Univ’s Professor Emeritus
English Festival Comment
Well, good afternoon, everybody. Mothers and fathers, and especially Kochou sensei, and the teachers and all of you students today. My name is Professor ※※※. I am Meiyo Kyoju from ※※※ University. I retired and received the award Meiyo Kyoju this spring and I also started as what Tokyo daigaku says honorary visiting professor at the university of Tokyo hongo campus.
Thank you very much for inviting me today to the English festival, I was so impressed with all of you. We started the festival with the ichinenseis and everybody was watching your drama and there was no sound – nobody was talking, and I think we were all very involved with it and we wanted to follow the story. It was bright and lots of fun and lots of energy for first year students.
I would also like to say how impressed I was, and kochou sensei thank you very much. I’ve known MLS, Model Language Studio for many, many years and this program is an outstanding, outstanding super English program teaching students how to speak English through English drama. It’s A++. And I’m so proud and happy to hear that our Junior High School has invited MLS to do seminars and things like that. And students, I hope you might have a chance to join MLS in the future.
The second drama was about the founder of our school who I know very well because her statue in ※※※ is right across the street from my office. The third year students who did this drama was wonderful. There was so much English dialogue, so much English you had to learn, I was very, very impressed. I wish you were my daigaku students at Todai right now. You did a wonderful job.
And last but not least, the ninensei, Blue Bird. Wow! You were like a Broadway musical, your costumes and everything was so dynamic and so cool. The singing and dancing, everything was absolutely dynamite so you did a super job.
Anyway, thank you very much. Also, I would like to say to all the students, there is an English speech contest in the summer in July which I will be at this summer. I hope all of you, in the future, will get a chance to participate in this contest. And last but not least in November, in late autumn, there is the all Saitama junior and senior high school English drama contest and I’m the chief judge at the contest. Three years ago, this school did very very well – was one of the winners of the contest. Two years ago, they were even better.
Unfortunately last year, this school wasn’t there but I do hope this kind of English activity helps the students very much. Not only studying for the entrance exam, but you need more and these kinds of activities really excites students to learn a second language much more. Also, I do hope in the future there’ll be a chance for you to come back to the Saitama contest and win.
Anyway, thank you very much students, you did a dynamite time! Thank you!

みなさん、こんにちは。保護者の皆様、校長先生、先生方、そして生徒の皆さん、今日はありがとうございます。私の名前は※※※と申します。※※※大学の名誉教授です。今年の春に定年退職し、名誉教授の称号をいただきました。また、東京大学本郷キャンパスで、名誉客員教授として活動を始めました。
本日はイングリッシュ・フェスティバルにお招きいただき、本当にありがとうございます。皆さんの発表にはとても感動しました。最初は1年生の劇でした。皆さんの劇を見ている間、誰も話しておらず、会場は静かで、全員が物語に引き込まれていました。明るくて、楽しくて、1年生とは思えないエネルギーに溢れていました。
そして校長先生、ありがとうございました。私はMLS（モデル・ランゲージ・スタジオ）を長年知っており、このプログラムは本当に素晴らしい英語教育プログラムです。英語劇を通して英語を学ぶ方法はA++で、素晴らしいものです。当校がMLSを招いてセミナーなどを行っていることをとても誇りに思います。生徒の皆さん、ぜひ将来MLSのプログラムに参加してみてください。
次の劇は、私がよく知っている「創立者の※※※先生」のお話でした。彼女の銅像は私のオフィスのすぐ向かいにあるので、私も良く存じています。3年生の皆さんの英語劇は素晴らしかったです。セリフがたくさんあり、覚えるのは大変だったと思います。本当に感動しました。今すぐ東大の学生になってほしいくらいです。

さて、最後になりますが、皆さんにお知らせがあります。7月に英語スピーチコンテストがあります。私はそのコンテストに参加しますので、皆さんにもぜひ挑戦してほしいです。そして、11月の晩秋には、埼玉県の中高生を対象にした英語劇コンテストがあります。私はその審査委員長を務めています。3年前、本校は入賞し、2年前はさらに素晴らしい成果を出しました。
残念ながら昨年は参加していませんでしたが、このような英語活動は、入試の勉強だけでなく、第二言語としての英語をより深く学ぶためにとても良い機会です。今後また、本校がコンテストに参加し、優勝してくれることを願っています。
本日は本当にありがとうございました。生徒の皆さん、素晴らしい時間をありがとう！
